Belmont Board of Selectmen Announce Free Parking during Month of June

Posted on May 27th, 2016 at 11:38 AM

BELMONT – The Belmont Board of Selectmen today announced the approval of free twohour
parking for three municipal parking lots-- including the Belmont Center Claflin lot--
for the month of June 2016. This program is partnership between the Town of Belmont and
Belmont Savings Bank to support the town’s merchants.

During the month of June, drivers will be able to park at the Belmont Center Claflin lot,
Cushing Square lot and Waverly Square lot from 8:30 am until 6pm for a total period of two
hours. The free parking – which is made possible through a partnership with Belmont
Savings Bank – comes partly in response to the Belmont Center Reconstruction Project, the
beautification effort currently underway in Belmont Center.

“I want to recognize the Board of Selectmen for approving this initiative, which will ease
parking for our residents and area shoppers during this construction,” said David Kale,
Belmont Town Administrator. “We look forward to continuing to work with the Belmont
Center retailers, and having an ongoing dialogue about the importance of keeping Belmont
friendly to families, shoppers and businesses alike.”

The free parking initiative was approved during the Monday, May 23 Selectmen meeting
with the purpose of helping local retailers maintain steady business during the period. The
selectmen also announced they intend to host a meeting with the Belmont Center business
community to provide information and receive input on ways to enhance parking
opportunities both on Leonard Street and from the Claflin lot.

“I applaud the Belmont Board of Selectmen for the June parking plan, which will provide
relief to local merchants and shoppers during this period of beautification in Belmont
Center,” said Bob Mahoney, president and chief executive officer of Belmont Savings Bank.
“The Belmont Center reconstruction is poised to have a transformational effect on Belmont,
and this free parking is a perfect snapshot of the project’s intent to make our town open
and welcoming.”

Previously, the Special Town Meeting voted in favor of allocating $2.75 million for the
project, which began last spring. Before the Belmont Center Reconstruction Project, it had
been nearly 50 years since Belmont Center has been updated.

“This partnership between the Town and Belmont Savings Bank is a wonderful
collaboration designed to assist Belmont’s local commerce,” Gerry Dickhaut, President of
the Belmont Center Business Association. “I am pleased that the Board of Selectmen made
this gesture of support for our retail community, and encourage area shoppers to take
advantage of this free parking initiative in June.”
