Posted on July 29th, 2015 at 11:04 AM

WATERTOWN - The Belmont Savings Bank Foundation today announced the winners of a $30,000 grant competition for its charitable giving initiative in Watertown. Previously, residents nominated local charities for a donation based on voting on the Foundation website.

Through the initiative, the Belmont Savings Bank Foundation is investing $10,000 into three programs located in Watertown. The local winners are:

Armenian Cultural And Educational Center (ACEC) has been serving the needs of the Armenian-American community of Greater Boston since 1980, and continues to be home to a number of Armenian organizations. The winning grant will fund updates to its Multi-media/Meeting room.

Watertown Boys and Girls Club is a leading youth development organization committed to providing after-school and summer opportunities to ensure safety and fun opportunities for area children ages 7-18. The winning grant is going to support the tutoring program known as "Power Hour."

Watertown Education Foundation (WEF) is a non-profit organization that raises funds to support programs and initiatives of the Watertown Public Schools. The winning grant is going to refurbishing the Watertown Middle School kitchen.

“We believe this investment will certainly make a difference in helping adults and young people in Watertown,” said Robert J. Morrissey, chairman of the board of directors of Belmont Savings Bank as well as the Foundation. “These grants affirm the mission of the Belmont Savings Bank Foundation to support and promote neighborhood-based programs that have a significant impact on communities across our footprint, specifically those with a focus in health, education, affordable housing or youth programming.”

Sixteen Watertown non-profit organizations participated in the competition. Voting closed on June 15th. The three organizations will be recognized at an awards reception on July 22nd. The bank plans to announce additional communities participating in the next round of the program in the fall.

“As a member of the community who also sits on the Foundation board, I am deeply proud of this partnership, and am confident about the impact these grants will have,” said Pat Brusch, Belmont Savings Bank Foundation Treasurer. “I look forward to seeing the ways these organizations utilize their grants and how it will strengthen quality of life in Watertown. I thank all groups for their participation in this process.”

The role of the Belmont Savings Bank Foundation is to support not-for-profit groups, institutions, schools and other organizations as a way of adding to the quality of life for people living in the communities in which Belmont Savings Bank serves. Since 2012, the Foundation has contributed more than $550,000 to local groups in the Greater Boston area.
